This image formed in the artist's mind first as a moose antler hanging by a thread from the sky, a theme she originally explored but did not complete years ago. One day Sue was mapping on one of her mining claims. While banging rocks (looking for scant evidence of gold) and unbeknownst to them they drove a moose out of the bush into a clear cut where the moose was promptly shot by hunters whose presence was unknown. Feeling great remorse for the moose, the picture formed in the artist's mind. The image haunted the artist for years. It would be a painting one day.

The term ascendance refers to the act of moving up. Here the moose skull is ascending. Ascendance can also mean the act of one group gaining power or dominance over another group or perhaps to evolution and extinction.

(The image is entirely imaginary. A moose skull lives in the artist's studio for reference.)
